Pebble Smartwatch - Need advice

I've been thinking of buying the pebble stainless steel smartwatch for 200 GBP, but i'm not sure if it's the one to get. Do you have any recommendations for smartwatches (the price is not a problem) What i like about this one is the battery life(5-7 days), the steel bracelet and the resistance of water as i'm biking from and to work/school. Downside is the resolution, no colors and no touch screen.

Current phone: HTC ONE MAX

Thanks in advance Smile

I've had the Pebble Original

I've had the Pebble Original since it came out, and recently switched to the LG G Watch R. Although the battery life was amazing (7 days was my minimum, it could last even longer), I felt like the features didn't really cover up the price and the 'poor' design. With poor I mean that it doesn't look like normal watches, and it's quite obvious. IMO the Steel is even worse, because it's bigger and the screen does not blend in with the watch itself. (On the black original, you couldn't distinguish the screens from the bezel which made it look quite cool and less obvious.)

The features are also quite limited since it's almost entirely passive, and it's not a big target for developers anymore since Android Wear is released.

The Android Wear alternatives weren't that mind blowing to be fair, the thought to switch to a Wear watch never crossed my mind, until I saw the G Watch R in my store. The biggest downside of most Wear watches is that they have an LCD screen, which requires constant backlight, which equals wearing a flashlight on your wrist and having to charge it more than once a day. ATM, the G Watch R is the only watch with an OLED display which means that black = off. The battery lasts between 2 and 3 days, which makes it the longest lasting smartwatch after the Pebble. With that, it is also the only smartwatch with a completely circular screen (the other round watch, the Moto 360 is missing a bit on the bottom) and the design is just like a normal divers watch.

About your requirements for water resistance and steel bracelet, any watch can meet those requirements. Almost every smartwatch is rated IP67 like the Pebble Steel, and is water resistant for up to 30 minutes at 1m deep. This means you can do anything with it but swimming. One downside, touchscreens react to water, so it's hard to use it for example in the rain etc. For bracelets, most smartwatches use 22mm bracelets, so you can get like any bracelet you want and use it.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, I still have both watches.

TL;DR: G Watch R is worth the price difference from the Pebble Steel.

Hi kiwi - The G watch R looks

Hi kiwi - The G watch R looks very interesting. I've been looking through a few reviews of this watch. Does the watch have a lock mode, so the rain wont make the watch jump around the menues? Also, the battery time... Can you easily get through an entire day without having to charge the phone even when the display is on the entire day? as when i'm working after school i'm basicly taking off at 6:30 AM and home at 10:30 PM

Thanks

The latest update (Wear 5.0.1

The latest update (Wear 5.0.1) has a "Theater mode" which turns the screen and touchscreen completely off, but there's also apps that will keep the screen on and will not respond to touch events.

What battery time are you concerned about? The watch battery is very good, it will definitely hold for 1 day, and if you use watchfaces with a lot of black in it, it will last up to 3 days, depending on notifications and use etc.

The battery of my phone has almost no drain because they both use BT 4.0LE

Which one did you get? If you got the G Watch R, it takes some time before the battery is properly calibrated. Which firmware version are you running?

To check the firmware, go to

To check the firmware, go to settings. The newest version is 5.0.1

Apps I recommend:
Showear (lock your watch from touch events)
Wear Mini Launcher (a lot quicker than the default way)
Pujie Black (amazing watchface, needs a patch for 5.0.1 though)
Remote Shot is also a cool app, though it's a bit pricey

To disable Google Fit, you have to swipe to the left when you get it's notification, and you can go to settings and/or block the app. Afaik there's no way to remove it though.

Hi kiwi - i've now had this

Hi kiwi - i've now had this watch for a few days now and i'm loving it!!!!!!  but there's a thing i cannot figure out on my own and was hoping you knew... tried to search on the internet, but there's not much help there, as the android watch is new.

1. when someone calls you, you're able to reply by a message when you go from down to up, such as: ill call back in 5 minutes. Is it possible to make your own premade messages, as i'm texting danish ppl.

2. When i'm using my "Call (Name)" go google feature, is it possbile to enable my own commands as when i'm saying "Call far(far=father)",it pops up with something completely different, which result in not finding the correct name in my phone book (calibrate the "go google" with new names/words)

3. I've seen your picture of "your" watch with the original TTT logo... How?

(The battery time is amazing, almost two full days)

Thanks in advance! you're the best ;>P

Good that you like the GWAR,

Good that you like the GWAR, didn't expect something else Wink

Point 1 and 2 are not possible ATM.

1. Because that's something that has to be configured in the client side app, which will probably be enabled in an update in the future
2. Because Google Now is not yet fully integrated with your phone, this should be done in the next big update for the GWAR.
3. I've just quickly created it with Facer, if you want a decent one, just ask me.

(Battery is probably getting better after a patch, since it was even better on 4.4 Smile )

The Watch is not made for a rainy day... Just went for a bike ride in rain down to the bus station and the watch changed its own watch face and scrambled my music with the different tracks and sound when it was on theater mode.
Kinda sad as I'm biking a lot in the rain and have to disable the watch while biking in rain Sad

Kiwi - have you heard of the

Kiwi - have you heard of the upcoming smart watch: "Geak watch 2 pro" ? - it's a watch with android and has a battery life of 7-8 days? - It uses the E-ink tecnologi which the LG G Watch R doesn't.... Do you think the LG is a bad buy? - as i have thoughts of selling mine when the new releases.

I did not hear about the Geak

I did not hear about the Geak II Pro yet, but as far as I can see I would still prefer the GWAR over that one. Android Wear is just a very neat platform with a lot of support (popularity is still growing very fast). As the Geak II Pro runs on normal Android, it will be dependent on software from Geak to get a nice watch experience, which I'd rather avoid (after using the "limited" Pebble). Battery life is not much of an issue for me since I charge it a few mins every day when I take a shower.
