Recent iCloud Scandal

Hi!

Another random news discussion initialized. This time, the iCloud scandal. Whats your opinion? Was the hacker right to do this? Should the celebs have secured their accounts better? Should iCloud have notified the celebs that their password was requested using the 'secret question, secret awnser' method?

Go!

as i have heard it said

as i have heard it said before,

"The lock on your diary wasn't good enough so i read it."

The matter is that they have no right to go hacking into iClouds in the first place and things are private for a reason. People have a right to take whatever photos they want on their phone, but people don't have the right to go hacking them. And in the end of it all, it's a sex crime against those who have had their photos distrubuted.

Correction: If you use Apple products you deserve nothing less than everyone to see thes nudies.

OT: It is a crime to steal property of others, even if it's on a computer on the cloud, so the hacker(s) was definitely wrong. We cant blame any company like Apple yet, because it's not clear how the pictures got stolen. A lot of pictures have never been in to iCloud, and the 'hacker' who leaked the images claimed this, even though he actually bought the pictures from other hackers. He probably claimed that he got everything from iCloud because Apple just recently patched a loophole in their system. An investigation from Apple reveiled that the pictures were not stolen by using that loophole. (But can we trust such statements?)

Anyway, imo the responsibility lies with the victims and the hacker(s), unless an official research concludes that for example Apple did not secure their services enough.

This cache of nudes has been

This cache of nudes has been circulating between underground hackers for a long time, members in the group used a 'loophole' in Apples iCloud to repeatedly try different passwords without being lockedout. They also used methods such as socail engineering, reseraching then correctly answering security questions. Apple currently deny these accusations:

But people are going crazy and making a fuss over these photos when there is a bigger problem. Yes these celebs don't want their nudes out on the internet but moaning at the hackers wont stop them. For years the NSA has been doing exactly what these hackers have been doing. They may not post their findings to the internet but they still hack into other peoples privacy, braking crucial human rights, and even if they don't share them to the world the NSA employees will most likely see or hear about whatever they find as it will circulate around the 'oofice'.

It's not just the NSA. Other intelligence organisations do the same. Privacy is being eroded in the effort to prevent terrorism but I reckon that's just the spin they put on it. A bigger game is afoot globally.

I simply hope that this shook

I simply hope that this shook people out of their general belief and understand that everything can be hacked and thus everything is stored. Once its on, it will never come off the internet.

I find it amusing that people

I find it amusing that people save these kind of images to the cloud and then do not expect anyone to take advantage of this.

Even more amusing is the fact that the media is condeming anyone watching the images while the media generaly stalks these persons 24/7 and would do just about anything to obtain these images. Hypocrites, hypocrites everywhere!

A lot of people might not even be aware of this, since pictures taken with an iPhone are automatically uploaded to iCloud

Haha, but those lawsuits will result in more stupid rules as in the end, its their fault for using an iphone Wink ( plus, they probably have this in their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, so Apple wont lose those lawsuits)

I'm not really sure if you have to enable this (you would definitely get a popup if so), but I think Microsoft and Google are doing the same with SkyDrive and Google+ Pictures.

Not automaticly though. every picture you take is local only unless you select the option to sync it to the cloud and this is disabled by default

but then enabeling this is the same as accepting the terms and conditions of this. thus, not apple at fault here.

not quite true. you have to enable this feature manually, so you are 100% aware of this while apple might hide it in their general Terms of service. Im suprised you take this position since apple is really in the wrong here while they potentionally are not to blame if you catch my drift. But exhi, there is a differerence between a hidden feature that is enabled by default and a feature that you have to enable manually.

It just highlights the

It just highlights the dangers of cloud storage. There's far more damaging things that could and are gained through hacking which do not get this level of media coverage.

Wait, i do not get your drift, apple is at fault but apple is not at fault? I'm lost but that could be me missunderstanding.

But, it could just be my standard hatred to the less intelligent side of this world as they always start blaming others instead of themselves, which is why i always take the opposite side of them.

Either way, i have not read nor tried to read the apple Terms of Service, but by law they have to make the customer aware of what they are 'purchasing/downloading/installing/enabling/using/etc'. By accepting this you accept any consequence it might have. If you cross the road without looking if there are cars then thats the risk you are taking. This is the same principle in my eyes.

Main point: People are too lazy to be precautious and then blame others for it. If you had the chance to know what you are walking into, but dont take it, then thats your problem.

I cannot agree more on this. There are millions of people out there that have been infected by malware/viruses and such that have no idea, and out of this murders follow and yet it does not gain the attention it should. (see this article for reference: http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/14/technology/security/ferguson-anonymous/ )

too long posts.

too long posts.

Conclusion: you use the internet = you are already exposed.

not use the internet = satalite still tracking you + can get data out of your device.

not use phone = you don't own a phone/you broke your phone.

phone didn't break = you are using Nokia3310

Believe me, i'm an Engineer.

If looked it up and in order

If looked it up and in order to upload your pictures to iCloud you have to accept a popup. So the user agreed to upload.
And still: loads of other devices than iMoney were used.
