OLED - what's your opinion?

BlackBird thought it would be a good idea to make a forum about your thoughts about the OLED technology...

Organic light-emitting diode

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED): a new type of LED lights. usually used in electronic devices such as TV's, mobile phones ..etc. in our university there was a senior project about using OLED lights for the roads and highways instead of the lights that produce heat, or i think it is called High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps. i saw the guys in the work making their model and adding the OLED lights. it looked cool but i don't know yet if it's going to be effecient (it is effecient actually, but i meant if the light would spread rather than be focused like LEDs) because what i have observed is that the more the light gets smaller, the more it will be focused in a certain position even though it's bright. i'm still looking into the types of lights though and i might be wrong about the focus part but that is what's happening nowadays.

OLED lights is much thinner than LED lights which is very flexible and can be curved as seen in some Samsung products.

you can find more information about the types of lights here:

http://www.eskimo.com/~jrterry/lampspage.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED

i read some info in those two sites just now, one of them is updated to the LED type. didn't find yet about OLED except wiki.

okay to my knowledge it was

okay to my knowledge it was the curve thingy. proved wrong.

As far as ive seen in my research they only difference ive seen is that there is no need for a backlight since the OLED's dont need any since they emit light themselves. This would be a lot better than edge lit tv most of the times since you will get light shading on your tv like this:

Now that would make it much better in contrast and colour reproduction but I am sceptical since at the sacrifice of thickness you can get Full LED displays. I have not seen any ACTUAL improvement over traditional backlit Tv's in terms of colour, contrast and response times. Its just the absence of backlighting that makes it better.

Now I see a future for this in the phone industry since it is very flexible and thin but in the TV and gaming world not so much. The lifespan of OLED is only either 1000 hours or 10000 hours which would result in if you use the TV normally you would get a maximum of 4 years before the OLED's breaks which to me is unacceptable. This really puts me off since regular screen last a LOT longer than this.

So for me its a no go. Only if they invent a better OLED that lasts longer and produces less ghosting then im interested but otherwise ill pass.

OLED is a beatifull

OLED is a beatifull technology for watching movies and tv etc. But for gaming it is just not suitable yet. Things like motion blur are very unsuitable for gaming purposes, and the burn-in issues are also a downside for gaming, since your HUD will easily (don't underestimate this) burn-in. This is also why a lot of OLED smartphones do not have on-screen buttons, because they will burn in within days/weeks. OLED is a good technology for non-stop moving screens like TV's, or wearables/integrated displays, because of the true black values.

(@Dynamic, IMO the curved screen is definitely not a gimmick, but it's overpriced at the moment. I sell TV's at my job, and it really makes a difference. It's just that this will never come to screens smaller than 42 inch, because the curve would be so minimal that there's no real use anymore. Also, you state that it only has use when you're sitting far away from your TV screen, while it's the exact opposite. The closer you are to your TV, the more use of the curved screen. That's also a focus of the curved designs: to bring bigger TV's to the smaller living rooms.)

The point of the curved screens is that it directs the light on your retina better but this effect is only presence in greater distances. the curved screen will actually remove perifiral vision because of the curvuture rather than increasing it. Its the basics of how the eye works
